They even found a couple of baby deer that had been taken in by Odin and protected from the fire. He had put himself right in danger’s way to protect those goats and was successful. The fire had destroyed almost all of his land and it seemed that the goats and Odin were the only things to survive that fire. By 11:10 we could see the first of the flames across the valley. Odin was limping, visibly exhausted, and had singed fur, while all the goats were completely fine. The dog’s owner, Roland Tembo Hendel, detailed his courageous dog’s act in a lengthy Facebook post. However, when they finally were able to return to the home, all 8 goats and Odin came running up to great them. Eventually, time was running out and Odin’s family had no choice but to leave him there. Odin did not like this and refused to leave his goat family. He loaded up the rest of their dogs and cats but unfortunately were not able to take their goats with them. When the fire broke out it was heading directly towards their home and Odin’s owner quickly knew he had to leave with his daughter if they wanted to get out safely. Odin is a Great Pyrenees, a herd dog, that lived with his family in Sonoma County and was in charge of taking care of the family’s 8 goats. However, even in the darkest times there are always glimmers of hope, and this story is one of those. There is so much sadness surrounding this event in my town and it’s been hard to think about much else. Some of my very good friends and family members have lost everything they owned in these fires. For those of you that are unaware, this last week my home was struck with a horrific firestorm that destroyed everything in it’s path. I am from the beautiful city of Santa Rosa in Sonoma County. At 10:30 pm, Roland Tembo Hendel smelled the smoke from the Tubbs fire that would go on to devastate much of the city of Santa Rosa, California. miraculously, they all survived the firestorm.
